The District of Columbia is not actually a state. It is a special district that serves as the permanent national capital of the United States of America. It sits on the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland.
Washington, DC, is the site of all three branches of the United States government (executive, legislative, and judicial), the United States Capitol, the White House, and numerous monuments and landmarks. The city has a busy subway system, many museums and arts venues, and many restaurants featuring a wide variety of cuisines.
